In this paper, the authors look at the topic of World Englishes, and ponder as to whether Japlish can be included into this vast group. Globalization and the role of English in the Japanese curriculum is examined so as to learn why Japlish has thus far not been perpetrated by the population. A class survey reiterates such feelings of inadequacy. However, as an in-class exercise shows, knowledge of the many varieties of English instills confidence in the learner and allows them to focus on communication, which is, of course, the object of learning a foreign tongue.
